South-South Exchange of MGF Partners in Livestock: Sharing Business Experiences and Best Practices

MGF projects

Germany, Feldafing: Africa’s livestock sector holds vast potential but continues to face challenges such as low productivity, limited market access, and the pressing need for sustainable practices. Addressing these barriers requires collaboration, innovation, and knowledge-sharing to build a resilient and thriving industry.

From May 12 to 16, 2025, 22 Matching Grant Fund (MGF) partners from seven African countries: Ghana, Chad, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Kenya, Cameroon and Tanzania will gather in Feldafing, Germany, for an experiential learning exchange under the Agri-Business Facility for Africa (ABF) project. This event will foster discussions on industry challenges, explore business opportunities, and promote B2B connections to strengthen partnerships along livestock value chains. The goal is to strengthen the capacities and resilience of these private partners in Africa to improve productivity, quality, and sustainability in the cattle, sheep, and goat value chains.

Knowledge Exchange and Innovation
Participants will share tried and tested local knowledge, innovations and technologies used to improve the productivity and quality of animal products. Discussions will also explore strategic partnerships and networks to strengthen Africa’s livestock business through complementary expertise.

Practical Learning and Field Visits
To complement discussions, participants will visit selected livestock enterprises and research stations in Bavaria. These visits will address key topics such as:

  • Breeding and feeding techniques for improved livestock health and productivity.
  • Herd management and climate-smart technologies for sustainable operations.
  • Machinery, meat, and milk processing innovations to enhance value addition.
  • Digital tools in livestock business to improve efficiency and market access.

Driving Action for a Resilient Future
By the end of the exchange, participants will develop an action plan to implement South-South partnerships that apply best practices and innovations. A monitoring and evaluation mechanism will also be established to track progress and measure impact. This learning exchange is a step toward a more resilient, innovative, and interconnected livestock sector in Africa, one that can effectively respond to market demands while promoting sustainable growth.
